When designing and planning a scaffolding structure, one of the things we have to consider is security. This is not just in the case of the security of our staff, the contractors carrying out the work, and the general public but also preventing unauthorised access to scaffolding. As you can imagine, providing a structure that allows people to climb, can cause a security risk to the building. Let’s look at a recent example of where access prevention was paramount.
Securing the Building From Potential Trespassers
Our recent client, based in Truro, had concerns about trespassers scaling the scaffold to gain access to the building at a higher level. The threat of intruders would be increased and it would leave the building more vulnerable. The premises required re-rendering and general maintenance works and we were asked to provide as many provisions as possible to prevent unauthorised access to the scaffolding throughout the duration of the works.
Methods to Deter Intruders
This is not something that is new to us, and as part of our assessment and subsequent plan, we incorporated several methods for preventing unauthorised access to scaffolding.
We used vertical boards up to 4 metres high from the base, making it very difficult to scale the flat surface the boards provide. The alternatives – scaffold or heras fencing, are easy to scale. Climbing smooth boards is a much more challenging prospect.

4 metre high boards prevent the scaffolding from being climbed
In addition to this, we also alarmed the scaffold. This meant that if anyone attempted or managed to access the structure, motion sensors would go off and sound an alarm. The alarm will alert the security company as well as anyone else in the area.
The boards, combined with the alarms are more than enough to deter anyone from attempting to gain entry and give the client the peace of mind that their building is secure.
Once this is all in place, it provides a much more secure structure, reduces the risk of intruders and allows the work to take place without the problems that intruders and vandals may cause.
