As a local scaffolding company, much of our work is physical. There is lots of heavy lifting involved, it is a labour intensive job and something that sees our employees working outside in all conditions. Now, while physical exertion is good for the health, we are also very mindful of the health and safety of our employees in all areas. Mental health is one such area. Not only do we risk assess the sites that we work on to ensure that safety is a priority, we also want to look after our team’s mental wellbeing too.
Mental Health First Aid Champions
With an increased focus on mental health in recent times, it is important to us as a company to make sure that the team at Drake Scaffolding are well looked after and to feel like they can talk to someone if they feel they need to. We discussed it as a team and decided that we would ask two of our workforce to become Mental Health First Aid champions, attending a course locally and becoming confident and knowledgable about dealing with any issues or feelings that our employees might be having.
Mental Wellbeing is Important to us as a Company
We now have two trained and certified employees that are equipped to listen, and offer help mental health first aid, to those that may need it within our company.
We had great feedback from the guys that attended who felt that they learned a lot. It was also a chance for them to get out of the cold and often wet conditions that they work in and enjoy tea and biscuits in doors. Congratulations to them and while we hope that it’s not something that they have to call on too often, we feel happy and secure in the knowledge that there is help and support for our team if and when the time arises.
If you run a local business, it is definitely something that is worth looking into.
